PARIS, 18 mars (Reuters) - Air France-KLM a rencontré des représentants de la compagnie espagnole Air Europa en vue d'une
possible prise de participation, afin d'étendre sa présence dans la péninsule ibérique,
a déclaré mardi à Reuters le directeur
général Ben Smith.

"Nous avons eu une réunion avec Air Europa", a déclaré

La vente d'une participation à Air France-KLM permettrait
à son homologue espagnol de rembourser 475 millions
d'euros prêtés par l'Etat durant la pandémie de COVID-19.

Elle marquerait la phase suivante de la consolidation du secteur fragmenté du transport
aérien en Europe, qui, selon les dirigeants, est nécessaire pour concurrencer les groupes américains et moyen-orientaux.

Ben Smith a par ailleurs déclaré qu'Air France-KLM était toujours intéressée par la
privatisation de la compagnie nationale portugaise
TAP, mais qu'elle attendait des indications supplémentaires de la part du gouvernement portugais.

"Nous aimons cette géographie. Nous pensons qu'elle peut vraiment nous aider à mieux positionner notre groupe par rapport à nos concurrents, mais nous n'allons pas poursuivre l'opération de consolidation juste pour le plaisir de nous agrandir", a déclaré le directeur général
d'Air France-KLM.

Lufthansa et IAG ont également manifesté leur intérêt pour la privatisation de
TAP, que le gouvernement portugais a déclaré vouloir mener à terme cette année.
